HISTORY OF DENIM

Denim clothes are most popular and most used fabric in the world. They were first used by American cowboys and Italian sailors in 1930. It is known that they were used by the natives of American continent in earlier periods.

1600’s: A fabric called jean that was worn by sailors from Geneva . It is known that the word denim which is a French term comes from the roots of Serge de Nimes, - Serge (a woven type), Nimes (a town in France).

1800’s: American gold searchers needed very strong and durable fabric. Leop Strauss was a merchant selling these kinds of fabrics. He realized that denim fabric satisfied their need, and he changed the name Strauss as Levi so that it could be remembered easier.

1930’s: Denim became very popular after cowboys in movies started to wear jeans and interest to these fabric increased further.

1940’s: Jeans firm became known all over the world after American soldiers did wear these kinds of clothes during World War II. After World War II, Wrangler and Lee firms started to take share in the world market like Levis.

1950’s: Denim became very popular among young people. In 1955, denim spread to all American schools as a result of television programs and movies, especially after Rebel without a cause movie of James Dean. The United Stated of America banned to wear denim pants in schools after these developments.

1960’s – 1970’s: Manufacturers started to produce jeans with various designs in order to catch up the fashion of 1960’s. Jean became the symbol of free dress up even in non-western countries.

1980’s: Jeans became high fashion dress type. Sales of jeans increased very rapidly after famous fashion designers such as Gucci put their label on them.

1990’s: Denim fashion settled down in fashion world to live forever.

2000’s: Jeans became indispensable in fashion world with summer 99 collections of Channel, Dior, Chloe and Versace firms.
